| So, since the market has been down lately, I figured that I'd be a fool to not get into while everything is so cheap. I signed up for an Etrade account and I'm ready to start investing. I think I will start out with something like Starbucks... a company local to me and something I already put my money into. I might also look into this company called Tenaris, they are a global provider of pipes and stuff for oil... which is something they can probably make a good profit off of for quite a while.
Anyways, there is no real point to this thread. Just that it is basically what I have been up to for the past few weeks. Does anyone else have anything in the market? If so, are you mostly just investing or trading?

| I'm not a stock person (at least not yet) buuuuut it's a good idea to get in now. I've thought about it. But I'm really bad at doing things I think about doing. My parents just bought a crapload of Ford stock cuz apparently it's a good thing to get according to a whole lot of people. I wonder if they're right... | |

| Well, it's a good thing to get anything that won't be folding because of the economy. Everything that is down and will survive will pretty much be worth a lot more when we have a rebound. The auto industry sucks, so their stocks are really low for now. | |

| I've heard reverse ETF's are really good to invest in when you know the economy is going to get worse (but you lose money when the economy grows). My dad works for a company based out of Monaco, so I know we have money invested in the foreign stock market but I don't know how much/if it's doing well or not.
I think my parents might have stock in my name but I don't know about any of it. My parents, this past year, started investing in weird things... like my dad bought the grave yard where he wants to be buried (he said "we'll never run out of business").

| I don't know if its the best idea to invest in Starbucks...they haven't been doing well lately. They had to fire like, 1,000 people and close a bunch of their shops. | |

| A lot of companies have had to do that. Basically, the way I see it is they are not going to fold... at least around the west coast. They opened a ton of new locations over the past couple years and then when the market went downhill they've had to cut back on that.
It's a luxury. People cut back on that stuff when they are more careful about money. When they don't worry about that as much they will not cut back as much.

| Yeah I'd pass on the starbucks stock too. Amazon.com is a pretty safe bet, you won't make a million but you shouldn't lose money. Last i checked their shares were around 80 bucks.

| DO NOT invest in Starbucks. They overmarketed by expanding the brand so that there'd be a Starbucks coffee shop on almost every corner of every town, it seems.
In 2005 they planned to market over 25,000 starbucks and only 8 states in the US that do not have a Starbucks.
For every 12,000 people in Manhattan there is a Starbucks. And since they expanded so much, they are closing down the ones that aren't necessary so that they don't have to market as much, spend as much money etc....

Here's a report from December showing it's a good corporation to invest in. I still feel pretty confident in their strength. Most people are closing unnecessary spending locations right now, and all of those places that have Starbucks on every corner I usually full of customers. The ones they've been closing are ones that are not producing much.
I'm still not in, but I know they are not going downhill by any means.

| I see. Well yeah, corporations like Pepsi, Coke etc.... will never really suffer so they don't need to downsize, or at least if they do... they don't have to do much downsizing. If you feel that Starbucks is a door to investing, perhaps you can get a tiny share of it and if it meets your expectations, after observing everything... then if you feel confident enough, invest more into it. It's only money. (:

| I'm not so much for investing I guess, I'm going to try trading and invest in bigger things like Boeing or like Trevor said, Amazon. That won't be for a while. | |

Amazon and Craigslist are good places to make some quick cash. You can go to yard sales, liquidations and get some new/partially used or refurbished goods for a quarter of the actual retail price, and get them whole sale... and then re-sell them online for twice the amount you've paid.
Then after the costs of postage, S&H etc.... you have some money leftover and then it accumulates after a while.
My mom tried to do it, but her problem is... she only wanted to sell things [she] liked... it's not about what she likes, it's what the consumer, the customer likes. But she's stubborn and won't listen to me... so I gave up on helping her. So I just sit back and watch her poor attempts at finding a way to the whole "get rich quick" scheme. Lol.

| I work at a shipping outlet, and we offer Ebay/Craigslist services. For a while that was my job, and I learned a lot about online auctions. I am currently listing a pair of shoes on Ebay. Shipping is good for me because I get such a discount where I work. | |
