Networks Are Playing It Safe With Procedurals This Fall Empty
PostSubject: Networks Are Playing It Safe With Procedurals This Fall   Networks Are Playing It Safe With Procedurals This Fall EmptyFri Aug 20, 2010 2:06 am

As I've pointed out a couple of times South park dvd season over the last few weeks, there seems to be a bit of a sameness in the dramas South park dvds that debut this fall, and that sameness comes down to one word: South park seasonsprocedurals.

A quick look at the new dramas Disney movies dvd show that many carry the classic procedural formula, where the case of the week takes Disney box set precedence over character development. The main characters in shows like ABC's Disney dvd 'Body of Proof' and 'The Whole Truth,' NBC's 'Chase' and 'Outlaw,' and CBS's 'The Defenders'family guy dvd box set are ones you want to get to know, but character pellets will only be fed family guy dvd complete to you if the case of the week merits them. Even a show like 'Hawaii Five-O' family guy box set feels a lot like 'CSI: Honolulu' right now.

Of the new fall dramas, only three seem to have any kind of serialized nature -- 'Lone Star' on FOX, 'The Event' on NBC,Hayao Miyazaki dvd and 'My Generation' on ABC. There seem to be a few hybrid shows that could go either way, namely 'Blue Bloods' on CBS, 'Undercovers' on NBC and Hayao Miyazaki dvds 'No Ordinary Family,' on ABC, but none of them will be Hayao Miyazaki Collection confused with 'Lost' anytime soon.

Why are the networks leaning so heavily on procedurals this year?

1. Networks got scared off by serialized buy Naruto dvd failures. When ABC showed the entire pilot of 'FlashForward' to critics at Naruto box set the summer 2009 press tour, many of us were wowed by how exciting and well-done buy Naruto dvd it was. But, having been made wary by high-concept serialized failures like 'The Nine,' 'Kidnapped' and 'Jericho,' and seeing how easy it was for Dragon Ball Z DVD collection a show like 'Heroes' to lose its way creatively, we allDragon Ball Z DVDs asked the producers the same question: How will you sustain the show past the Dragon Ball Z complete DVD first season?

The answers they had were largely unsatisfying,Bleach DVD and our fears were realized when the show stumbled after the pilot and didn't find Buy Bleach DVD its footing creatively until there was a change in the production team and a long Bleach DVD box set break left the show adrift with viewers.

The networks right now are seeing those Mickey Mouse Clubhouse DVD failures from the last five or so years are probably thinking that they can't risk those kinds of flame-outs again. All dramas Mickey Mouse Clubhouse collection are expensive, but at least procedurals have a chance to catch on at any point during the season as people feel freeMickey Mouse Clubhouse DVD collection to jump in and check the show out. Ben 10 Alien Force box Set With most serialized shows, if the audience checks Ben 10 Alien Force DVD out at the start, they're not coming back.

2. Procedurals repeat well. If you wanted to seeFuturama Box Set what everyone was talking about with 'The Good Wife' or 'NCIS: Los Angeles,' two of the freshman dramas that hit it big last season, all you need to do Futurama DVD Season is jump in on a few of the summer reruns and you'll get the gist of the show. Sure, 'Wife' has the continuing storyline where Alicia has to deal with her Futurama 1-5 Box Set husband's corruption charges and the iffy state of her marriage, but you can still jump in and enjoy the story of the week without feeling lost.

It's the same reason why you see more reruns married with children box set of procedurals on cable and in syndication than you see reruns of shows like 'Lost' or '24.' More repeatability means more moneyMarried with children DVD back on the networks' investment.

3. Procedurals used to be known as plain ol' dramas.Thomas and Friends box set Why do people love the various 'Law and Order,' 'CSI' or 'NCIS' shows? A lot of it is because those are the biggest reminders of the dramas they Thomas and Friends movie grew up watching. Look back on the biggest dramatic hits of the last forty years, and most of them would be classified these days as procedurasl.Thomas & Friends Even character-heavy shows like 'Magnum, P.I.' and the original 'Five-O' had a case of the week element to them that people could connect with without having to know the characters' backstories.
